What an uplifting evening at the City Academy in Bristol on 27th September for the launch of the Schools & Colleges of Sanctuary! A crowded auditorium saw a ceremony which included inspiring contributions from a range of speakers including the Guest of Honour, Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of the County and City of Bristol, Mary Prior and representatives from local education, Bristol politicians and the refugee community. There was also music, poetry and film all helping to illustrate the rich diversity of Bristol’s community – and of it’s schools and colleges. Thanks to all those of you who came and made the event a real success.

There was the presentation of of certificates to Ashley Down, Compass Point, City of Bristol College and City Academy to celebrate their achievement in meeting the criteria to achieve the status of Schools & Colleges of Sanctuary. This shows they have been recognised as establishments that are proud to be places of welcome for sanctuary seekers,places that actively work to promote positive attitudes about people seeking sanctuary.

The three simple principles you need to adopt, and provide evidence of, to become a School or College of Sanctuary are:
•Learn about what it means to be seeking sanctuary
•Take positive action to embed concepts of welcome, safety and inclusion within a school or college, and in the wider community
•Share your vision and your achievements,be proud
