Training Launch: Supporting Refugee Students in the Classroom – 21st November 2023

Schools of Sanctuary host the launch for the bran new teacher education programme developed by Refugee Education UK and the University of Nottingham. In the event, Catherine Gladwell (REUK) and Dr Joanna McIntyre (UoN) outline the course content, structure and who it might benefit.

In the first webinar of the year, we outline a background to the Schools of Sanctuary programme and explain the process and criteria to become a Schools of Sanctuary, whilst sharing details of helpful resources and top tips for moving forward.

Schools of Sanctuary: Refugee Week Launch 2023 – 25th April 2023

In this one hour meeting, we share details of the resources and opportunities schools can take part in during Refugee Week. This includes the Refugee Week Children’s Pack and a Day of Welcome. We also share some suggested activities to make this Refugee Week meaningful and ask schools to participate in the BIG Refugee Week Fundraiser.

 

Empowering Student Voice and Leadership – 31st January 2023

Joined by the Oxfam Campaigns team, in this webinar we look at how schools can support participatory activities to empower student voice and leadership, drawing on some examples from schools across the UK. See the resources mentioned here.

Welcoming Ukrainian Students in Schools – 29th November 2022

Presenters from Refugee Education UK present on the background educational and displacement contexts of Ukrainian students before outlining practical strategies schools should adopt to best support them, and all students with forced displacement backgrounds.

An Introduction to Schools of Sanctuary – 11th October 2022

In the first event of the year, Schools of Sanctuary Coordinator, Megan, give a half an hour overview of the programme, how to become a School of Sanctuary and offers some top tips for beginning the process and bringing the application together.  The presentation includes contributions from a Sanctuary Ambassador and recently awarded School of Sanctuary.

End of Year School of Sanctuary Celebration – 5th July 2022

To celebrate a year with unprecedented growth in the Schools of Sanctuary network, this event aimed to share and celebrate some inspiring efforts and innovative activities that schools have developed in order to be awarded one of the newest Schools of Sanctuary. CoS UK and Refugee Week partnered with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and the National Education Union (NEU) to offer this online event giving an overview of how to support the wellbeing of students from sanctuary seeking backgrounds.

The Bell Foundation organised and hosted this event with speakers from Refugee Education UK, Nottingham Education Sanctuary Team and Schools of Sanctuary to share top tips for schools.

 

Supporting Afghan Students in Schools – 3rd November 2021

CoS UK and Refugee Education UK partnered to provide this event outlining the potential challenges facing newly arrived Afghan students and offering practical strategies schools/teachers can adopt to overcome them. 

How local authorities can promote welcome and sanctuary in schools – 14th September 2021

What is a School of Sanctuary – 29th June 2021

 CoS UK hosted a webinar  What is a School of Sanctuary? which provided an overview of the Schools of Sanctuary Stream, and showcased some examples of how schools have expressed welcome and solidarity with refugees in their settings.
